BaZi vs. the Chinese Zodiac: What Is the Difference?

The zodiac usually uses one Year Branch; BaZi uses four Stem-Branch pairs.

The Chinese zodiac usually refers to the animal connected with a person's birth year. In BaZi, that animal is the Earthly Branch of only the Year Pillar.

BaZi uses four pillars—Year, Month, Day, and Hour—and each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The Day Master, not the zodiac animal, becomes the central reference point for the rest of the chart.

This explains why two people born in the same zodiac year can have very different BaZi charts. Their month, day, and hour pairs may differ, and even the same four visible pillars can be discussed differently across interpretation schools.

Zodiac forecasts are broad cultural content. A BaZi annual reading is more individualized because it compares an annual Stem-Branch pair with a complete birth chart and a ten-year cycle. Neither is a scientifically validated prediction method.
