Five Element Cycles: Production and Control at a Glance

A compact lookup page for the two relationship cycles used throughout BaZi.

The Five Elements are connected through two basic cycles.

Production cycle:

• Wood produces Fire.
• Fire produces Earth.
• Earth produces Metal.
• Metal produces Water.
• Water produces Wood.

Control cycle:

• Wood controls Earth.
• Earth controls Water.
• Water controls Fire.
• Fire controls Metal.
• Metal controls Wood.

In BaZi these are classifications, not physical claims. The cycles help define how every Stem relates to the Day Master and therefore how the Ten Gods are assigned.

Production is not always “good,” and control is not always “bad.” A relationship can support balance in one chart and create excess in another. Season, strength, position, and the complete structure determine how it is discussed.
