Hidden Stems in BaZi: What Is Inside an Earthly Branch?
Understand why an Earthly Branch can carry more than one elemental relationship.
Hidden Stems are Heavenly Stems traditionally assigned inside each Earthly Branch. They are not extra characters printed in the basic eight-character chart, but many calculation methods include them when weighting elements and deriving Ten Gods.
Some Branches contain one principal Stem, while others contain two or three. This helps explain why a chart that appears to have no visible Fire, for example, may still contain Fire within a Branch.
Hidden does not mean secret destiny. It describes a structural layer in the traditional model. Its importance depends on season, whether the same Stem appears visibly, the Branch's position, and the interpretation method being used.
For beginners, first read the visible chart and Day Master. Use Hidden Stems to refine the Five Element picture later, not as a reason to create a second, contradictory reading.
