True Solar Time in BaZi: Why Your Birthplace and Clock Time Can Matter

Many BaZi calculators ask for a birthplace for more than a time-zone lookup. Traditional chart calculation may compare civil clock time with local solar time. The difference can come from longitude within a time zone, daylight-saving time in historical records, and the equation of time.

This matters most near a traditional two-hour boundary. If a correction moves a recorded time from one branch to another, the hour pillar can change. Away from a boundary, the same correction may not alter the pillar at all. A transparent calculator should show whether a correction changed the date or hour branch rather than implying that every result is equally sensitive.

There is no single universal BaZi convention. Some practitioners use standard local time; some apply true solar-time adjustments; some make different choices around the Zi-hour day boundary. These differences are a reason for humility, not alarm. If you compare charts across websites, compare their calculation policies before deciding that one result is “wrong.”

For the best input, use the birthplace named on the record, the local clock time recorded at birth, and the correct historical date. Do not convert it to UTC yourself unless a particular tool asks you to. If a family only remembers “around noon” or “late evening,” record that uncertainty. Honest uncertainty produces a more responsible interpretation than a false exact minute.
