Separating Geng and Xin Metal imagery from seasonal clauses

Locate the print's actual Metal imagery separately from qualified Geng/Xin month clauses; a metaphor does not fill missing conditions.

Original site reading · Figures drawn for this series · Ancient quotations and sources are noted below

The Metal imagery and the selected Geng/Xin month clauses answer different questions. A general description speaks of Metal's inner yin/yang composition; an autumn paragraph imagines bells and vessels after working by Fire. First- and eighth-month stem clauses then name different states, actions and objects. A metaphor cannot fill those month clauses' missing conditions.

This reading uses one identified Waseda witness, retaining its printed 網 title and the catalogue's 綱 as different evidence fields. The printing year remains unknown.[7,8] Four local Geng/Xin clauses provide a spring/autumn comparison, while two general Metal selections locate the imagery at its own level. No birth chart, individual diagnosis or metallurgical experiment is supplied.

General Metal imagery is not a pair of stem definitions

Scan 63 right, 論金, says 金以至陰為體,中含至陽之精,乃能堅剛,獨異衆物.[1] An original translation is: “Metal takes utmost yin as its substance, contains within it the essence of utmost yang, and thereby can be hard and firm, distinct from other things.”

The subject is 金 at the general Five-Phase level. 至 and 中含 give the sentence its inner-composition imagery; 乃能 connects that description with the stated firmness. The quotation does not split its subject into a Geng definition and a Xin definition.

In these selected passages, an independent printed definition of Geng as an axe or Xin as a jewel has not been verified. Familiar images from another book therefore cannot be added as though they were this witness's starting terms. The useful distinction is between imagery actually located here and imagery a reader might bring to the page.

Bells and vessels belong to the autumn general paragraph

The right half of scan 64 continues the general Metal discussion: 秋月之金,當權得令。火來煅煉,遂成鐘鼎之材.[2] An original translation is: “Metal in the autumn months holds authority and has seasonal command. Fire comes to work and refine it, so that it becomes material for bells and ritual vessels.”

The seasonal premise is already inside this image. Removing 秋月 and 當權得令 would leave a general-looking maxim about Fire, while deleting 火來煅煉 would remove the action connecting Metal with the vessel image. Both deletions change what the selected sentence actually argues.

This is still a general autumn-Metal paragraph, not the first-month Geng or eighth-month Xin sentence. Its Fire is not automatically a printed Ding/Bing selection for every later monthly clause. Nor does the vessel image rank actual people, prescribe their occupations, or establish measured material properties.

First-month Geng includes a local generation limit

Scan 64 left, 正月庚金, reads 正月庚金,木旺之際,有土皆死,不能生金。且金之寒氣未除,先用丙暖庚性.[3] An original translation is: “First-month Geng Metal, at a time when Wood flourishes: any Earth present is described as dead and unable to generate Metal. Moreover, Metal's cold qi has not departed; first use Bing to warm Geng's nature.”

The strong Earth language is the old paragraph's local judgment. It is not a scientific statement that actual soil dies. Within this argument, 不能生金 blocks the shortcut “Earth generates Metal, therefore every Earth here helps.” The named month and Wood-flourishing premise are part of that qualification.

The second sentence then gives a different action: warming Geng through named Bing. 且 adds the remaining cold premise, and 先 identifies a priority. Replacing it with the earlier autumn paragraph's refining image would change both season and action. The excerpt also stops before further Earth/Jia and disclosure branches, so it cannot establish that Bing is the only object considered anywhere in the complete section.

Eighth-month Geng lists objects without printed first/next words

Under 八月庚金, scan 69 left, the selection says 八月庚金,剛銳未退,用丁甲丙不可少.[4] An original translation is: “Eighth-month Geng Metal: its hardness and sharpness have not retreated; Ding, Jia and Bing cannot be lacking in the use described.”

剛銳未退 is different wording from first-month cold not yet removed. The response also names three stems rather than the preceding excerpt's first-priority Bing. These textual differences remain visible even though both sections concern Geng.

丁甲丙 is a printed list, but its order on the page is not itself the phrase 先丁次甲後丙. An analytical note may preserve the sequence of names while leaving the priority field empty. Adding a three-step order would invent a grammar the short quotation has not supplied. Later disclosures, positions and cycles remain outside this selection.

Xin changes from loss of command to its extreme

Scan 72 left, 正月辛金, supplies the selected words 辛金失令,取己土以生之.[5] An original translation is: “Xin Metal lacks seasonal command; take Ji Earth to generate it.” The heading identifies the first month, while 之 refers back to Xin in the quoted clause.

The specified Earth is Ji. It cannot be replaced with Wu by a general Five-Phase relation, nor can 取 be silently converted into an asserted first priority over every unselected later object. The surrounding section has additional qualifications; selecting this secure clause does not mean that the whole first-month section uses Ji alone.

Scan 77 left, 八月辛金, instead says 八月辛金,當權得令,旺之極矣,耑用壬水淘洗.[6] An original translation is: “Eighth-month Xin Metal holds authority and seasonal command and is at an extreme of flourishing; specifically use Ren Water to wash and cleanse it.” 耑 is the retained printed form.

This differs in state and action: first-month loss of command with Ji generation, eighth-month extreme flourishing with Ren washing. The latter image is not the general paragraph's Fire-refining operation. Retaining named Ren also prevents Water from becoming an interchangeable elemental label.

The selected words end at 淘洗. Subsequent Earth excess, Jia, absences, quantity and disclosure branches are not reconstructed here. Strong 耑用 wording should be retained as local wording without turning a finite opening into a full-section algorithm.

The figure groups Xin's two located clauses for comparison; it does not join them into a continuous original quotation. This distinction also applies when one physical scan contains a general paragraph on one side and a named stem/month entry on the other.

Use the second-collection directory and Ten Gods guide for continuity and relation terms. A dependable Metal note records where the image belongs, which subject the month clause has, and what state, action and qualification the latter actually prints. That makes comparison possible while leaving its unselected branches visible as limits.
