Introducing Great Expansion divination begins with the actions actually written in the text. A procedural passage, evidence of how people historically performed it, and evidence that it predicts events answer different questions. Preserving the first does not automatically establish the other two.
This article examines a finite Xici shang passage in juan eleven of this Zhou yi zhu shu set. The witness distributes Xici shang across juan ten and eleven; another edition's volume numbering must not be imposed. Classical-Wing wording and older annotation marked annotation says alternate on the page. Retrieve the procedure by layer, and do not substitute scan numbers for unverified folio numbers.[1–3]
Separate fifty from the forty-nine used
The opening states 大衍之數五十其用四十有九: the number of Great Expansion is fifty; its use is forty-nine.[1] It distinguishes a stated number from the number used. An abstract saying only fifty stalks cannot then treat all fifty as the object of every operation. Forty and nine expresses forty-nine, leaving a difference of one. That arithmetic alone does not resolve every later procedural detail.
Dividing, hanging, counting and placing the remainder introduce the actual procedural questions. Explain use with those actions and the interpretive layers, rather than calling any passage containing numbers a modern random-number generator.
The number used is also not a sample of successful predictions. The sentence records no fifty trials and forty-nine correct results. Turning those numbers into a percentage changes their grammatical and evidential roles.
Actions carry symbolic explanations
The passage connects division into two with the two, hanging one with the three, counting by four with the four seasons, and placing the remainder with intercalation. It then mentions two intercalations in five years and says to make the two le placements before hanging again.[1] These symbolic associations belong to the selected Wing passage; they are not cosmic meanings added by this article.
Record the action beside its stated symbolism. A note containing only divide into two piles and count fours conceals why the text mentions two, three, seasons and intercalation. A note containing only symbolizes the cosmos conceals the verbs and their order. Action and explanation should accompany one another without replacing one another.
For cultural reading, the repeated dividing, counting and remainder operations can be considered a paced form of attention and interpretation. That is this article's interpretation of procedural form, not a measured psychological treatment. Nor does it make symbolic counting a complete modern calendar algorithm.
Procedural wording does not settle every detail uniquely
The continuation gives 四營而成易十有八變而成卦: four operations accomplish yi, and eighteen changes accomplish a hexagram.[2] This is an important counting clue. It still requires an explanation of how ying, yi and bian correspond to operational units at that location.
A reconstruction must specify how division begins, how remainders are treated, which objects remain after each round, which actions repeat, and how results enter the line and hexagram record. If a detail comes from an annotation or a later tradition, identify that source. Do not assign the entire specification to a preceding brief sentence.
Two procedures both called Great Expansion need comparison of their actual actions and repetition conditions. Their shared fifty and forty-nine do not prove that every tradition is identical. This article does not expand the finite passage into a unique demonstration algorithm or attach unverified probabilities for six, seven, eight and nine.
| Claim | Evidence required | Scope of the selected passage |
|---|---|---|
| The Wing contains an action and number | Actual wording, layer and location | The finite passage can be retrieved |
| A tradition completes an operation this way | Its full instructions and demonstration | Two numbers cannot replace them |
| Historical people performed the ritual this way | Dated, identified records of practice | A procedural text alone is insufficient |
| A result predicts a real event | Predetermined rules, data and independent tests | This passage supplies no such validation |
Reproducibility and efficacy ask different questions
A cultural demonstration can declare its operations in advance and let others repeat them. Matching results checks whether the demonstration followed its own rules. It does not yet test whether a judgement connecting a hexagram with a future event is accurate.
Include statement selection and interpretation in a full account. Producing a symbol completes one generation or selection step. Deciding which lines change, which statements are read and how they address a question introduces further interpretation. If those choices continually change after the event, repeating the physical procedure cannot serve as predictive validation.
The absence of a modern efficacy test does not remove the procedure's cultural interest. The relation between numbers and symbolism, the meanings attached to actions and the interpretive contributions of annotation are specific research questions. Each question should be matched to evidence actually available.

Start with a small check
Check two details easily lost in an abstract. Does the opening distinguish the number of Great Expansion from the number used? Does the end retain again and afterward? An explanation preserving only count fours cannot recover the selected passage's structure.
Add a source-of-detail field. Fill it separately for Wing wording, annotation, later reconstruction and present explanation. An unlocated operation should not yet be assigned to the classical sentence. That record is more useful for comparing traditions than claiming every demonstrated step is explicit in the classic.
The next article applies the same check to shared yin-yang vocabulary: what does a common concept support, and which methodological or historical evidence must still be supplied?
