A memorable phrase can supply an entry without replacing its conditions. We select two actual passages under 看命口訣, returning first to their own surroundings, then asking questions of related prose. This route is our original reading organization, not a claim that the book already supplies one automatic algorithm.
The Qin Shen'an/Wenming witness is catalogued as 1926, NLC42998. Juan 10, scan 196, printed page 1 has 看命口訣, continuing on scan 197, printed page 2. The corresponding juan-5 headings are 論正官 at scan 62, printed page 3, and 論正財 at scan 82, printed page 23. [1–5] We do not interpret the complete mnemonic section or repeat the preceding phase's full Officer and Wealth analyses.
First return to the mnemonic's own context
The Officer-number paragraph on scan 196 begins 凡正官一位, “With one Direct Officer,” follows with honorable-person and character language, then states 年時有印尤妙,多則反主成敗, “Seal in year and hour is especially valued; abundance instead concerns success and failure.” [1] These descriptions are historical expression, not our judgment of someone's honesty, character or career.
Extracting one Officer and a set of personality adjectives removes the year/hour Seal and “if many.” Making “many” a detached threshold also leaves its contextual referent unresolved; the text continues with four pure Officers and different Seven Sha counts. We do not resolve every branch from a shorthand card.
The first restored task is further questioning: position, relation, connective and subsequent distinctions. Technical classification does not thereby become a moral judgment about an actual person.
Route one: number cues back to Officer qualifications
論正官 says 止許一位,多則不宜。正官先看月令,然後方看其餘, “Only one position is permitted; many are unsuitable. First examine the Month Command, then the rest.” It explains the order through the month's being in season. [3] Shared number language is followed by questions of position and priority.
A separate paragraph joins a vigorous day master, Wealth–Seal support, absence of Hurting Officer/Sha and an Officer-domain cycle through “additionally requires,” before discussing clashes, breaks, harms and other avoidances. [3] Treating the mnemonic as complete removes those questions from the reader's record.
A reading route can therefore connect number/year-hour Seal cues to monthly priority, day master and Wealth–Seal, damaging conditions, and cycle. This is our selected route. It neither proves historical abbreviation from those particular sentences nor transfers every prose qualification unconditionally into every mnemonic.
Definition, usage and evaluation still differ. Asking questions of a same-named section does not turn a technical name into a personality test or validate a historical prediction scientifically.
Route two: read the Wealth phrase's local turns first
Scan 197 says 官星為祿,財星為馬。行官星發官,行財星發財,二者不可缺,各有所用. Our translation: “Officer is Lu and Wealth is Horse; passing through Officer brings office, through Wealth brings wealth. Neither can be missing; each has its use.” [2] Isolating “through Wealth brings wealth” flattens conditions and objects into a modern profit guarantee.
The same page subsequently states 人命以財官為本,柱中但得其一,亦可發福, “A configuration takes Wealth and Officer as its basis; obtaining even one in the pillars can also bring benefit.” It then distinguishes year/month/day/hour and flourishing cycles, explicitly requiring 須身旺方許, “Only with personal strength is this permitted.” [2] Retaining local contexts is more important than immediately finding another page to affirm the first phrase.
“Neither can be missing” and “even one” cannot become one uninterrupted quotation, nor should either be deleted for tidiness. They require their surrounding questions and permitted cases. We do not fabricate a universal checklist requiring Wealth and Officer in every configuration.
Return to Direct Wealth and ask what its use requires
論正財 states 用財要得時乘旺,不偏正混亂,不重疊多見,自家日主有力. Our translation: “Using Wealth requires timeliness and flourishing, no confused Direct/Indirect mixture, no repeated abundance and an effective day master.” [4] Timing, mixture, repetition and capacity are distinct questions, not one vague Wealth score.
The next sentence contrasts abundant Wealth with a weak person and no Seal support against scant Wealth with a strong person and Peer/Rob Wealth, treating excess and insufficiency. [4] A name does not replace that combination. The short cycle phrase cannot establish “more Wealth is better,” or actual assets and returns from terminology.
Unnecessary Wife–Wealth and spouse-injury predictions are omitted without losing qualification comparison. Separately labelled canon sayings are not appended to these main-prose excerpts; collected voices need not disappear for a summary.
| Memory cue | Return to its own passage | Questions for related prose | Unsupported direct conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Officer number | Year/hour Seal, abundance and subsequent branches | Month, strength/Wealth–Seal, damage and cycle | Actual character or guaranteed office |
| Wealth cycle brings wealth | Each use, even one, strength required | Timing, mixture/repetition, capacity, Seal/Peer | Actual assets, profit or more always better |

Restore questions without fabricating quotations
A note can say “This phrase sends me to another page to check personal strength and Wealth–Seal.” It cannot paste the other page's wording onto the mnemonic and call it one continuous ancient formula. Source, heading and layer stay visible in both notes and diagram.
Shared words also do not establish the mnemonic's historical source. Our route follows actually comparable discussions and is modern learning organization. Proving borrowing or writing order would require additional witness and documentary evidence.
A short phrase loses more than characters
Cards easily omit position, connectives, targets and alternate voices. One Officer does not replace monthly priority; a Wealth cycle does not replace effective personal capacity; “many” does not itself explain every combination.
Leave two lines beside each card: what it explicitly says, and which questions require its own paragraph or related prose. This preserves conditional reading instead of accumulating favorable/unfavorable labels.
The phase moves from star references and timing alternatives through shared patterns and case evidence to mnemonics, retaining reference and qualification throughout. Table, routes, diagram and translations are original. Scope is these two comparisons, not complete-book collation, real-person destiny claims or an accuracy demonstration. Source scans and modern commercial commentary are not republished.
